Chart pattern recognition game — can you call the next 5 candles?
Every card deals you a random market, a random timeframe and a random time of day — EUR/USD on the M15 during the London open, gold on the H4, Nasdaq on the daily. The outcome is hidden. You read the candles and call it: up, down, or sideways over the next five candles. This is chart pattern recognition training stripped down to the only part that actually builds skill — a decision, then immediate feedback.
Read the candles you are given
Trend, structure, momentum, where the wicks are rejecting. No indicators, no news, no ticker — just price action, exactly like a chart you have never seen before.
Call up, down or sideways
The shaded band around the last close is the neutral zone, sized at 5% of the visible high-low range. Price has to close outside it for a directional call to pay.
Five candles play out live
The next five candles print one by one. Land it and you take the point and extend your run. Miss it and you find out immediately what you misread.
A candlestick pattern quiz built on real historical price data
Nothing here is generated or simulated. Every card is a slice of the same Dukascopy OHLC history the FxBacktest backtester replays bar by bar — the identical data you would trade against in a full session.
Random market, random hour
Cards are dealt across 25 instruments — major and cross forex pairs, gold and silver, Brent, the US and German indices, Bitcoin, Ethereum and single stocks — on six timeframes from M5 to daily. The hour is random too, so you learn what a dead Asian session looks like versus a New York reversal.
The neutral band decides it
A small range is drawn around the last visible close — 5% of the high-low range of the candles on screen. After five candles, a close above it means UP was right, below it DOWN, and still inside it SIDEWAYS. Predicting a flat market correctly scores exactly the same as calling a breakout.
Your accuracy, tracked
Points, current run, best run and hit rate per difficulty level are kept as you play. Sign in and your score follows you between phone and desktop, so you can watch your read on the hard level improve over weeks rather than guessing whether it has.
Three levels — 20, 50 or 90 candles of context
How much history you get before the decision point is the whole difficulty setting. Fewer candles means a tighter, noisier read; more candles means real structure to work with, but also a wider neutral band to break out of, because the band scales with the range you can see.
| LEVEL | CANDLES SHOWN | WHAT IT TRAINS |
|---|---|---|
| EASY | 20 candles | Short-term candlestick reading — momentum, wick rejection, the last impulse. A narrow band makes directional calls pay more often, so this is the level to warm up on. |
| MEDIUM | 50 candles | Intraday structure — the swing highs and lows around the decision point, pullback depth, whether the trend is still intact or already rolling over. |
| HARD | 90 candles | Full context — range boundaries, multi-swing trends, consolidation before expansion. The band is widest here, so calling a genuine sideways market becomes a real skill. |
Reps with feedback, not screen time
Most traders think they are practising when they are really just watching. You stare at a live chart, form a quiet opinion, never write it down, and by the time price resolves an hour later you have already rewritten the memory of what you thought. That loop teaches almost nothing, which is why people can screen-watch for a year and still misread the same setup.
Skill comes from a specific loop: commit to a call, get the answer quickly, and notice what you missed. That is why learning to read candlestick charts works best in compressed reps. Twenty cards in ten minutes gives you twenty judgments with twenty answers — more honest feedback than a week of watching a live market where you never had to commit to anything.
What this drill actually teaches
- Recognising a range before it breaks. Most of the time price is going nowhere. Learning to call sideways is worth as much as calling a breakout, and it is the single hardest habit to build for traders who only look for entries.
- Reading momentum honestly. A run of big green candles feels like continuation and is often exhaustion. The game punishes that reflex quickly and cheaply.
- Stripping away confirmation bias. With no symbol name in front of you and no news to rationalise with, all you have left is what the candles are doing.
- Feeling the difference between timeframes. Five M5 candles and five daily candles are wildly different amounts of risk. Playing across both builds an instinct for it.
Where the drill stops and real work starts
Being right about direction is not the same as being profitable. A trader who is right 45% of the time with disciplined risk beats one who is right 60% of the time and sizes badly. Pattern recognition is one input into an edge — position sizing, stop placement, risk-to-reward and the discipline to skip weak setups are the rest of it, and none of them can be trained by a card game.
That is what the FxBacktest backtester is for. When a pattern keeps working for you in the game, go and test it properly: replay real history bar by bar, place the trade with realistic spread and commission, size it against a real account balance, and read the report afterwards. If you want the theory behind it first, the free forex course covers technical analysis, risk management and trading psychology from scratch.
