- Open the simulator and pick US30 from the instrument list - or US100, US500, GER40 and the rest of the 105.
- Choose a start date and timeframe. The chart hides everything after it, so you read the same bars a trader had at the time rather than a chart you already know the answer to.
- Replay bar by bar and place trades with the mouse. Stops, targets and position size are handled in index points, not forex pip values.
- Read the report. Win rate, expectancy, profit factor, Sharpe and drawdown across the session, saved to your trading journal so the sample accumulates.

Tick-derived OHLC bars from the same archive our published research is computed on. Lower timeframes cover shorter windows because the underlying data is far denser - the table is exactly what you can replay today.

The Dow does most of its moving in two hours.
Average high-to-low range of each US30 hourly bar, grouped by the hour it opened in New York time (daylight saving handled), across every hourly bar in the archive.

| 10:00-11:00 | First full cash hour | 131 points |

| 00:00-01:00 | Overnight, Asia | 35 points |
71,899 US30 hourly bars, May 2013 to September 2026, FxBacktest archive. Averages pool all years, so the point values are pulled up by recent, higher-priced years; the ranking of the hours is what holds.
Two things follow for a backtest. A setup that triggers at 03:00 Eastern and one that triggers at 09:45 are not the same trade, even with identical rules - the second faces roughly four times the movement, so a stop sized for one is wrong for the other. And the closing hour is almost as active as the open, which matters if you hold intraday positions into 16:00.
The daily range itself has grown too. The median US30 day covered 110 points in 2017 and 583 points so far in 2026 - but as a share of price, that is 0.52% against 1.17%. Size by points and an old backtest under-risks a new market; size by percentage of the daily range and the comparison holds.
Three things that break a forex strategy on the Dow.

It gaps every night, not once a week
Our gap study measures 9,722 overnight breaks across US30, US100, US500 and GER40. Most overnight gaps fill within a day, but an index CFD reopens every evening, so an overnight stop has to survive a gap five nights a week rather than one.
Read the study GuidePoints, not pips
A US30 move is quoted in index points, and a 50-point stop is a very different risk from a 50-pip one. The Nasdaq guide walks through sizing an index in points - the same logic applies to the Dow, with a larger point value per day.
Read the guide GuideOne session carries the day
A currency pair has three overlapping sessions; the Dow has one that matters. Test your rules inside and outside 09:30-16:00 Eastern separately, or a strong cash-session edge hides a losing overnight one.

US30 backtesting FAQ
Is US30 backtesting really free here?
Yes. All 105 instruments including US30 are unlocked on the free plan, with every timeframe, full trade execution and the session report. Nothing to download, no card. Paid plans add more saved sessions, more simultaneous indicators and deeper analytics - not the US30 chart or its history.
How much US30 history can I replay?
Daily, 4-hour and hourly bars from May 2013 - around 3,900 sessions and more than 72,000 hourly bars. Lower timeframes cover less: M30 from 2017, M15 from 2022, M5 from 2025, M1 from 2026.
When does US30 move the most?
In the first two hours of the New York cash session. Across more than 71,000 hourly bars since 2013, the 09:00 and 10:00 Eastern hours average 137 and 131 points of range, against about 35 points in the quiet hours around midnight Eastern - roughly four times as much movement.
Is this the Dow cash index, the YM future, or a CFD?
A CFD on the Dow Jones Industrial Average - what most retail traders and prop firms quote as US30. Near-24-hour session with a short daily break, and no quarterly rollover unlike the YM future. The cash index only trades during US hours, so its gap behaviour is different.
