The strategy tester was built for robots. You trade with your eyes.
How to run a backtest in the MetaTrader 4 and 5 strategy tester, which modelling mode to trust, and what to do when it says “waiting for update” or tests nothing at all. And if you trade by hand, a free browser replay where you click buy and sell on real history — then bring your MT5 reports in to be read properly.
THE TESTER IS BUILT FOR EAs Visual mode replays a chart, but there are no buy and sell buttons in it. Manual traders end up installing third-party panels to click a trade. MT TESTER · CODEvsREPLAY · CLICKThe tester runs an Expert Advisor over your broker's history. The steps are almost identical in MT4 and MT5; the modelling options are where they differ.
Press Ctrl+R, or View → Strategy Tester. It docks under the chart.
Choose the Expert Advisor, symbol, timeframe and date range. Set deposit, leverage and spread.
Every tick for the final run; open prices or 1-minute OHLC for a fast first pass.
Tick Visual mode to watch it trade, press Start, then read the Results, Graph and Report tabs.
Most tester failures are not bugs. They are history, settings or the EA's own checks — and the Journal tab under the tester usually says which.
The tester is pulling history for the symbol and dates you set. Leave it to finish, check the terminal is connected to the broker, and shorten the date range if the broker does not hold data that far back.
MT5Open the Journal tab. The usual causes are invalid stops (closer than the broker's minimum), not enough money for the lot size, a symbol name the EA does not expect, or input values that never trigger an entry on that timeframe.
MT4 + MT5In MT4, the quality figure reflects how complete your M1 history is. Download fuller history from the History Center (F2), or import third-party tick data. In MT5, use real ticks if your broker offers them.
MT4The EA calls an external library. Allow DLL imports in Tools → Options → Expert Advisors and in the EA's own settings — and only for EAs whose source you trust.
MT4 + MT5Every-tick modelling over years is heavy. Do a first pass on Open prices only or 1 minute OHLC, narrow the inputs, then run every tick on the final candidate. In MT5, add cores or cloud agents for optimisation.
MT4 + MT5Check the spread setting: a “current” spread taken on a quiet moment flatters every trade. Use a fixed, realistic spread, add commission, and compare the in-sample period with a forward period the EA never saw.
MT4 + MT5If your strategy lives in your head and on the chart, not in an EA, you need a replay you can trade on. That is what FxBacktest is — in the browser, with the same history on every device.
Keep the MetaTrader tester for EAs — it is free and it is the reference for MQL code. Use a replay for the trades you take by hand. Most traders who do both end up with two tools, not one.
Two free tools read what MetaTrader already saves — no broker login, nothing connected to your account.
Drop the report the tester wrote into the MT5 & MT4 backtest report analyzer: cost drag, profit concentration, drawdown recovery, flat stretches, lot escalation and results by session. It runs in your browser; the file never leaves your device.
Save your live account history as a report and drop it on the trading journal: every closed trade lands as a row and opens on a real candle chart with entry, exit, stop and target drawn.
No terminal, no history download, no panel EA.
Email or Google, no card. The replay opens in the browser.
Any of 105 markets, any timeframe, a random or chosen start date.
Step or play the candles. Buy and sell on the chart with a stop and target.
Win rate, expectancy, profit factor and drawdown, saved to come back to.
Short answers about the MT4 and MT5 strategy tester and the alternatives.
Open the Strategy Tester with Ctrl+R (View, Strategy Tester). Choose Expert Advisor, pick the EA, symbol, period and modelling (Every tick is the most detailed), set the date range and spread, tick Visual mode if you want to watch it, and press Start. Results, Graph and Report tabs appear when it finishes.
Open the Strategy Tester with Ctrl+R. Choose the EA, symbol, timeframe and date range, then the modelling: Every tick based on real ticks is the most accurate when your broker provides tick history. Set deposit and leverage, optionally a forward period, tick Visual mode to watch, and press Start.
Not natively. Visual mode replays the chart at an adjustable speed, but the tester has no buy or sell buttons, so manual traders install a third-party panel EA to place trades during the replay. A dedicated replay tool such as FxBacktest lets you click trades on the chart directly.
The tester is downloading or synchronising history from your broker for the symbol and dates you chose. Let it finish, make sure the terminal is connected, and shorten the date range if the broker does not hold history that far back.
Every tick (MT4) or Every tick based on real ticks (MT5) for the final test, because stops and targets inside one bar are settled in the right order. Open prices only or 1 minute OHLC are fine for a fast first pass and for EAs that only act on a closed bar.
The MT4 and MT5 strategy testers are free with the terminal, but they test EAs. For manual backtesting, FxBacktest is free in the browser: 105 markets, every timeframe, buy and sell on the chart, and a full session report, with no download and no data to buy.
