TradeZella Backtesting: Plans, Limits and a Free Alternative

TradeZella is a trading journal first and a backtester second. Here is exactly what its backtesting does on each plan, what it costs over three years, and when a free replay simulator does the same job.

Key takeaways

  • No free plan. TradeZella's pricing page lists three paid tiers, from $26 a month billed yearly.
  • Backtesting starts on the cheapest plan, replay does not. Essential tests 10 strategies by hand; trade replay and automated runs need Pro ($44-$59 a month).
  • It is built around your live journal. If you only want to backtest, you are paying for a journal you may not use.

Short answer: TradeZella's backtesting is worth it if you already want TradeZella as your trading journal. If you only need to backtest, a dedicated replay simulator costs less - or nothing. TradeZella added manual and automated backtesting to a product that was built to import and analyse your live trades, and its pricing reflects that: you buy the journal and get backtesting with it.

Two details matter more than the headline prices. First, trade replay is not on Essential - the cheapest plan lets you backtest manually but not replay a day of your own trades. Second, automated backtesting is rationed: 10 runs a month on Pro and 100 on Ultra. If you iterate quickly on a coded idea, 10 runs can go in an afternoon.

What TradeZella does well

  • One place for live and backtested trades. If your live trades already flow into TradeZella from your broker, comparing them with a backtest of the same setup is genuinely useful, and it is the real reason to pick it.
  • No-code automated runs. On Pro and Ultra you can describe rules and run them across years of data without writing code - with the monthly run cap above.
  • Futures and stocks. The data covers asset classes most forex-first tools leave out.

Where it falls short for a backtest-only trader

  • You pay for the journal either way. There is no backtest-only tier, and no free tier to prove the habit on first.
  • Replay costs Pro. The feature most people mean by "backtesting" - stepping through a chart bar by bar - is on the $44-$59 plan, not the entry one.
  • Automated runs are metered. Fine for a final check, tight for exploration.

The question to ask first: do you want a journal for your live trading? If yes, TradeZella's backtesting is a sensible extra. If no, you are buying a journal to get a backtester, and a dedicated tool will do that part for less.

Which one to choose

Choose TradeZella if you trade live, want your broker trades journaled automatically, and want to backtest inside the same product - and the Pro plan's price is fine for that combination.

Choose a dedicated simulator if you are still building a strategy, trade forex or CFDs, and want to log your first hundred practice trades without a subscription.

Where FxBacktest fits

This is our product, so weigh this section accordingly. FxBacktest is a manual bar-replay simulator that runs in the browser. The free plan unlocks all 105 instruments - forex, metals, energy, indices, crypto and stocks - and every timeframe from one minute to monthly, with full trade execution, automatic lot sizing from the stop and the complete session report. It is capped at 3 saved sessions and 1 indicator at a time, and nothing you save is deleted on a timer. Pro is €12 a month and Ultra €39.

Against TradeZella, the trade-off is the journal: FxBacktest journals the trades you place in the simulator, with tags and notes, but it does not import your live broker trades the way TradeZella does, and it has no futures. Our scripting and optimizer cover the automated side without a monthly run cap, but you write FXScript - or ask the built-in AI assistant to write it - rather than describing rules in a form.

Disclosure: FxBacktest is our own product. Its limitations are stated as plainly as everyone else's, and every competitor figure on this page links to its source.

Bottom line

TradeZella backtesting is a feature of a journal, priced like one. Buy it for the journal and the backtesting is a good bonus. If backtesting is the whole job, start with a free replay simulator, prove the habit, and pay only when a cap actually gets in your way. For the wider field, see the best forex backtesting software.

TradeZella backtesting FAQ

Does TradeZella have backtesting?

Yes. Every plan includes manual backtesting (10 strategies on Essential, unlimited on Pro and Ultra), and Pro and Ultra add automated runs - 10 and 100 a month - and unlimited trade replay on a 1-second chart.

Is TradeZella backtesting free?

No. TradeZella lists no free plan. The cheapest tier, Essential, is $35 a month or $26 a month billed yearly ($315), as shown on its pricing page on 4 October 2026.

Which TradeZella plan has trade replay?

Pro and Ultra. Essential does not include trade replay. Pro is $59 a month or $44 a month billed yearly; Ultra is $99 a month or $74 billed yearly.

What is a free alternative to TradeZella for backtesting?

A free browser replay simulator such as FxBacktest covers the backtesting part: 105 instruments, every timeframe, trade execution and a full report on the free plan. It does not import live broker trades, which is the main thing TradeZella adds.
