Measured: why one journal template cannot serve every instrument
Most journal software asks you to log a trade in pips and then compares those numbers across instruments. That comparison is close to meaningless, and here is the size of the problem measured across 10,297 daily bars:

The same 50-pip stop is a normal EURUSD stop and a very tight gold stop — it covers 70% of an average EURUSD day but only 23% of an average gold day. A journal that reports "average stop distance: 50 pips" across a mixed book is reporting a number that means three different things.
So whatever tool you choose, make sure it records these alongside the raw pips:
- R multiples — the outcome as a multiple of the risk taken. This is the only unit that compares directly across instruments, and it is why R is the backbone of a serious journal.
- Stop distance as a fraction of that instrument's daily range (or its ATR), so "tight" and "wide" stay meaningful across a mixed book.
- The instrument and the year, kept as filterable fields. Gold's average daily range moved from 105 pips in 2018 to 535 in 2025 — a journal that merges those years hides its own most useful finding.
Get those three right and the journal starts answering questions instead of storing rows. Get them wrong and you accumulate a large, tidy dataset that cannot be compared with itself.
