Coverage as of October 2026 and growing nightly. One standard lot is 100,000 US dollars, so one pip on USD/CAD is worth 10 Canadian dollars per lot - the simulator converts it to your account currency. The tick layer is described on the USDCAD tick data page.
The oil link is fading.
Correlation of USD/CAD daily returns with WTI crude oil, by year. Negative means the Canadian dollar tends to strengthen on the days oil rises.

2,273 days with both a USD/CAD and a WTI daily close, 2 January 2018 to 22 October 2026, FxBacktest archive; Pearson correlation of daily log returns. WTI history in the archive starts in 2018. The range column is the median high minus low over every USD/CAD trading day of the year; the all-years figure covers 2010-2026.
From 2018 to 2023 the textbook held: on a day crude rallied, USD/CAD tended to fall, with a yearly correlation between -0.27 and -0.45. In 2025 and 2026 it is close to zero. A USD/CAD rule that leans on the oil price was tuned on a market that no longer behaves that way - split the sample at 2024 and check that the edge survives on both sides.
The pair also got quieter. The median USD/CAD day ranged 110 pips in 2016 and 53 pips in 2026, so a stop copied from an old backtest is about twice as wide, relative to a normal day, as it was when it was tested.
36,220 USD/CAD hourly bars, 3 January 2021 to 22 October 2026. Each block is the average of its three hourly medians, in pips. The 12:00-15:00 block holds the US and Canadian data releases at 8:30 New York time and moves almost three times as far as the 03:00-06:00 block.

Stops inside one candle
With a median day near 75 pips, many USD/CAD stops and targets sit inside a single candle. Ultra settles them on the real tick order instead of guessing which level traded first.

If your idea is to sell USD/CAD when crude rallies, backtest WTI on the same dates first. The table above says the link was strong until 2023 and has faded since.

The median USD/CAD day halved between 2016 and 2026. Split the sample by regime, and make sure each part holds enough trades to mean something on its own.

Open the simulator and pick USD/CAD from the instrument list - or EUR/USD, GBP/USD, AUD/USD, CAD/JPY and the rest of the 105.
Choose a start date and timeframe. The chart hides everything after it, so you read the same bars a trader had at the time rather than a chart you already know the answer to.
Replay bar by bar and place trades with the mouse. The lot size follows from your risk percent and stop distance, with the pip value converted for you.
Read the report. Win rate, expectancy, profit factor, Sharpe and drawdown across the session, saved to your trading journal so the sample accumulates.
USD/CAD backtesting FAQ
Is USD/CAD backtesting really free here? +
Yes. USD/CAD and all 105 instruments are unlocked on the free plan, with every timeframe, full trade execution and the session report. Nothing to download, no card. Paid plans add more saved sessions, more simultaneous indicators, deep minute history and tick data - not the USD/CAD chart itself.
How much USD/CAD history can I replay? +
Daily and 4-hour bars go back to April 2010, and hourly, 30-minute and 15-minute bars to 2010 as well. The free plan keeps the most recent 9 months of 5-minute bars and 6 months of 1-minute bars; on Ultra both reach back to 2010.
What is one pip worth on USD/CAD? +
One standard lot is 100,000 US dollars and a pip is 0.0001, so one pip is worth 10 Canadian dollars per lot - roughly 7 US dollars at a rate of 1.40. The simulator sizes the lot from your risk percent and stop distance and converts the pip value for you.
Does USD/CAD still follow oil? +
Less than it used to. The correlation of its daily returns with WTI was between -0.27 and -0.45 every year from 2018 to 2023, and -0.02 in 2025. Test any oil-based rule on both halves of the sample.
