Candles invent an edge.
Ticks take it back.

We replayed 623,288 random trades on the Canadian dollar from 2016 to 2025, at a 1:2 reward-to-risk. Random entries have no edge, so the honest answer is zero. Here is what each method reported.

CANDLE-BASED BACKTEST
+0.07R

per trade on H1. Every candle that touched both levels was booked as a win, so random trades looked like a profitable system.

VS
TICK-ACCURATE BACKTEST
-0.01R

per trade. Settled on the real tick order, the same trades came out at practically break-even, which is what random entries should show.

Method: USDCAD bid ticks, January 2016 to December 2025 (239,239,126 ticks). A long and a short at every candle open; stop and target sized from the previous 14 candles' average range (1:2 = stop 0.5 ATR, target 1 ATR; 1:1 = stop and target 1 ATR). The first candle reaching either level decides the trade; where it reaches both, candle rules book the target and the ticks are scanned for which level traded first. Costs excluded so only fill order is measured; "got wrong" counts the 1:2 double-hit trades where the stop traded first. The same test on all five markets we ran is on the tick data overview.

WHAT ULTRA ADDS ON USDCAD

Ticks under every
USDCAD trade you place.

You replay candles and trade with the mouse the way you always have, in the same chart as the free FX Backtest simulator. The tick layer sits underneath and settles the moments candles cannot.

Tick-accurate SL / TP

Every stop and target settles on the first tick that trades the level. Longs exit on the bid, shorts on the ask, just as a broker fills them.

The real spread

Measured on every 2025 weekday tick, the median USDCAD spread was 1.30 pips in the New York afternoon and 2.00 at rollover, with one tick in ten at 5.30 or more. Market entries pay the spread quoted on the candle's last tick, not one flat number.

5, 15 & 30-second charts

S5, S15 and S30 timeframes built straight from the ticks. Zoom into the busiest minutes of the day and see the order the moves came in.

Every day since 2016

230M quotes and counting. Through the 2016 oil crash aftermath, the 2020 crash, the 2022 hiking cycle and the 2025 tariff swings. Test across regimes, not one quiet year.

Nothing to install

No tick downloader, no CSV import, no MetaTrader history settings. Each day's ticks stream into the chart the moment the replay needs them.

A report you can trust

Win rate, expectancy, profit factor and drawdown from tick-settled trades, plus the full Ultra suite: sessions, MFE, tags and stress tests.

SECONDS TIMEFRAMES

Zoom in to
five seconds.

An M1 bar on a Canadian CPI or jobs release hides a whole fight. S5 shows it: the first spike, the stop run, the reversal. Canadian data and US data both land at 13:30 UTC, and oil moves the loonie on top, so USDCAD is one of the pairs where the order inside a candle matters most. See how far releases move price.

HOW IT WORKS

Three steps.
The ticks do the rest.

If you already backtest USDCAD on candles, run the same rules again on ticks. An edge that survives is one you can size with confidence.

01
Pick USDCAD

With Ultra active, the tick layer switches on for the Canadian dollar automatically and the seconds timeframes appear in the switcher.

02
Choose date & timeframe

S5 for scalping, M15 or H1 for intraday swings. Everything after your start date stays hidden.

03
Trade as usual

When price reaches your stop or target, the day's ticks decide which traded first, and the report is built on those fills.

FAQ

USDCAD tick data questions.

What traders ask before switching USDCAD to ticks.

Can I download the USDCAD tick data as CSV? +

No. The ticks stream into the backtesting chart, where they settle your trades and draw the seconds timeframes. They are not offered as a file download. If you need raw CSV files for your own code, use a tick downloader; if you want to replay and trade the Canadian dollar on those ticks, this is the tool.

How far back does the USDCAD tick data go? +

To January 2016 - every trading day of USDCAD bid and ask quotes since then, more than 230M ticks in total.

Which orders use the ticks? +

Stop-loss and take-profit exits are settled on the first tick that trades the level, longs on the bid and shorts on the ask. Market entries take the real spread on the last tick of the candle. Pending limit and stop entries still fill on candle rules, and if a day's ticks are incomplete that candle falls back to candle rules too.

Do I need Ultra to backtest USDCAD? +

No. USDCAD is on the free plan with candle data on every timeframe; minute bars cover the most recent months on the free plan. Ultra adds the tick layer: tick-accurate exits, real per-tick spread and the S5, S15 and S30 seconds timeframes.

Are other symbols available on ticks? +

Yes. Ultra tick data covers 20 markets: the major forex pairs and yen crosses, gold, silver, US100, US30, US500, GER40, Bitcoin, Ethereum, Apple, Nvidia and Tesla. See the full tick data list, or XAUUSD tick data and US100 tick data.

STOP GUESSING

Find out if your USDCAD
edge is real.

Run your strategy on the ticks that actually printed. If the edge holds, trade it with confidence. If it does not, you just saved your account.
