The data

Nine years of Bitcoin, seven days a week.

Tick-derived OHLC bars from the same archive our published research is computed on. Lower timeframes cover shorter windows because the underlying data is far denser - the table is exactly what you can replay today.

Measured

Bitcoin's weekend is a different market.

Median BTC/USD daily range as a percentage of price, Saturday and Sunday against Monday to Friday, every day from January 2021 to September 2026.

2,085 BTC/USD daily bars (596 weekend, 1,489 weekday), 1 January 2021 to 16 September 2026, FxBacktest archive, UTC days. Earlier years are left out because the archive's weekend coverage before 2021 is incomplete.

A typical Bitcoin weekend day moves a little over half as much as a typical weekday, and the gap shows up in the tails too: 35.3% of weekdays range more than 5%, against 12.8% of weekend days. Two consequences for a backtest. A breakout rule tuned on weekday volatility will mostly fail to reach its target on a Saturday, so report weekend and weekday trades separately before you decide the rule works. And a forex-style backtest that skips weekends silently deletes over a quarter of Bitcoin's calendar - the chart here replays them as real sessions.

The hourly picture is flatter than on an index or a currency pair, because there is no exchange open. Across more than 72,000 hourly bars, the busiest hours are 13:00-16:00 UTC, as US equity traders arrive, and the quietest are 03:00-06:00 UTC - a difference of under two times, against roughly four times on the Dow.

How it works

Four steps, about a minute.

  1. Open the simulator and pick BTC/USD from the instrument list - or Ethereum, Litecoin, Cardano, Bitcoin Cash and the rest of the 105.
  2. Choose a start date and timeframe. The chart hides everything after it, so you read the same bars a trader had at the time rather than a chart you already know the answer to.
  3. Replay bar by bar through weekdays and weekends alike, and place trades with the mouse.
  4. Read the report. Win rate, expectancy, profit factor, Sharpe and drawdown across the session, saved to your trading journal so the sample accumulates.
Questions

Bitcoin backtesting FAQ

Is Bitcoin backtesting really free here?

Yes. BTC/USD and all 105 instruments are unlocked on the free plan, with every timeframe, full trade execution and the session report. Nothing to download, no card. Paid plans add more saved sessions, more simultaneous indicators and deeper analytics - not the Bitcoin chart or its history.

How much Bitcoin history can I replay?

Daily, 4-hour and hourly bars from May 2017 - about 3,200 daily bars and 73,000 hourly bars. 30-minute data from October 2020, 15-minute from September 2023, 5-minute from August 2025 and 1-minute from May 2026.

Does the Bitcoin chart include weekends?

Yes. Bitcoin trades seven days a week and the chart replays Saturday and Sunday as real sessions, not as a gap. Since 2021 the median weekend day has moved 2.38% against 4.02% on a weekday, so a strategy tested on weekdays only is describing a different market.

Can I backtest other cryptocurrencies?

Yes. Ethereum, Litecoin, Cardano and Bitcoin Cash are on the same free plan with the same replay engine and report, alongside forex, indices, metals and stocks - all listed on the backtest hub.
